Red Stripe Hosts Successful Blood Drive
At its annual blood drive held recently, Red Stripe collected 108 units of blood, the company’s largest ever. The blood drive is used as a key engagement tool for sensitising employees about the importance of donating blood. Red Stripe also invited donors from nearby businesses Toyota Jamaica and Celebration Brands Limited.
For years, Red Stripe has been a major contributor to the National Blood Transfusion Service. On World Blood Donor Day on June 14, Red Stripe was recognised for its long-term contribution to the Blood Bank.
“Red Stripe has been contributing to the Blood Bank for over 10 years, and every year we raise the awareness on this important national issue,” said Veronica Benain, Red Stripe’s occupational health adviser.
“Employees know that the blood they donate today can be their lifesaver tomorrow, and so they come out each year to bank this blood to help save a family member, friend or another employee’s life.”
Red Stripe’s human resource team has also been a champion of fair and equal HIV/AIDS workplace policy. The company first established a non-discriminatory HIV policy 15 years ago by ensuring the status of a potential employee did not factor into their hiring.
“We were one of the benchmark companies for the Ministry of Labour when the National Workplace Policy on HIV was being established,” added Benain.
The Ministry of Labour, in 2013, launched the National Workplace Policy on HIV AIDS as a means of preventing discrimination. The national policy seeks to eliminate discriminatory behaviour and ensuring equal opportunities for all Jamaicans.
