CIBC staff and clients ‘make deposit’ to Jamaica Blood Bank

Employees and clients of CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank made a special “deposit” to the Jamaica Blood Bank recently.

At a blood drive on October 15, hosted at the bank’s New Kingston Headquarters, Managing Director Nigel Holness, and his team along with several clients kept Jamaica Blood Bank doctors and nurses busy all day responding to the call of the National Blood Transfusion Service which has an annual target of 60, 000 units.

Holness noted that “a lot of times persons do not realise the value of blood until they need it in an emergency or a friend or family member is in an accident or hospitalized and in need of blood. We have joined the call of the Blood Bank for voluntary donors to make regular contributions and we’re encouraging all eligible persons in Jamaica to do likewise.”

He said CIBC FirstCaribbean has committed regionally to related programmes including the SickKids Caribbean Initiative which focuses on the improvement of the quality of life for children with cancer and other blood disorders across the region.

In 2013, with the support of SickKids Foundation of Canada, the SickKids Initiative (SCI) a not for profit partnership with the University of the West Indies (UWI), Ministries of Health, hospitals and institutions in six Caribbean countries and the SickKids Centre For Global Child Health was established. This partnership focused on building sustainable local capacity to diagnose, treat and manage paediatric cancers and blood disorders.
