Blood Types

There are four major blood types: A, B, AB and O. Each is further classified by whether the Rhesus factor is positive or negative.

Compatibility matters

Every blood type is needed.

In a blood transfusion, donor and recipient blood must be compatible to prevent complications. NBTS tests during the donation process to determine your blood type.

A+Needed
A-Rare Rh-negative type
B+Needed
B-Extremely rare
AB+Needed
AB-Extremely rare
O+Needed
O-Rare and critical
Rare blood types are especially important. Persons with rare Rh-negative blood types, including AB-, B-, A- and O-, are especially encouraged to donate regularly when eligible. Every blood type is still needed, and donors of all types help patients across Jamaica.

Why donate whatever your type?

Patients across Jamaica need compatible blood and blood products for emergencies, surgeries, childbirth complications, sickle cell care, anaemia and other medical needs. If you do not know your blood type, NBTS can identify it during the donation process.
